Abstract

Insufficient knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding and the incessant promotion of formula milk make many mothers fail to breastfeed their babies exclusively. The 2010 Basic Health Research stated that only 15.3% of infants aged less than 6 months were exclusively breastfed. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence exclusive breastfeeding and how other factors can influence mothers not to exclusively breastfeed their babies at the working area of the Lahewa Plus Health Care Center in North Nias Regency in 2018.
This research method used is mixed method. The Mixed method design in this research is Sequential Explanatory Mixed Method which aims to make qualitative data help provide deeper and more ideas for quantitative results. The population in this study were all mothers who had babies aged 7-12 months as many as 57 mothers while sampling using total sampling. Data analysis using Chi-squre Test with a significance of 0.05.
The results of the study of 57 respondents conducted by the authors based on statistical tests showed that there was an influence of education on exclusive breastfeeding. Other factors that influence exclusive breastfeeding are beliefs and scattered myths so that they have a major influence on their actions to exclusively breastfeed their babies.
It is expected that Health agencies can provide information by increasing knowledge to mothers to suckle by holding counseling about breastfeeding so that mothers understand and understand the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. For breastfeeding mothers are expected to take the time to communicate with health workers to add information and understand the importance of exclusive breastfeeding to babies and their benefits for the development of the baby in the future.
