Abstract
Breastmilk complementary food is an abbreviation of complementary breast milk. The point is additional food given to babies or toddlers who still suckle on their mothers. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children only be breastfed for at least 6 months. Exclusive breastfeeding coverage at Kota Matsum Health Center is 15-27.5%, while the target for achieving exclusive breastfeeding coverage is 47%. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of maternal behavior with the provision of early breastmilk complementary food on infants aged 0-6 months at Kota Matsum Health Center in 2018.
The research design is an analytical survey with a cross sectional approach. The research was done at Kota Matsum Health Center in Medan Area, located on Jalan Amaliun No. 75 Medan. The time of this study was conducted in July-August 2018. The population was 103 respondents and reduced using the Slovin formula, which was taken as many as 50 mothers who have infants aged 0-6 months. The sampling technique in this study was using proportional stratified random sampling technique. The data used were primary and secondary data. The data were analyzed with univariate and bivariate using Chi-square test.
The results showed the majority of knowledge lacked in the category of 28 respondents (56.0%), the majority of supplementary feeding was in the given category of 28 respondents (56.0%), the majority of maternal attitudes were in the negative category of 26 respondents (52.0 %), the majority of actions were in the non-performing category as many as 28 respondents (56.0%). Knowledge results using Chi-square test at 95% confidence level obtained value P = 0.002 <α = 0.05, and attitudes obtained P value = 0.000 <α = 0.05, action obtained value P = 0,000 <ɑ = 0,005
The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between maternal factors with the provision of early breastmilk complementary food on infants aged 0-6 months. It is expected to provide counseling information in an effort to increase the knowledge of mothers about breastmilk complementary food in order to improve the health of infants and toddlers.
