Abstract

A mother needs peace of mind and should be far from feeling depressed (stress) because it will affect the production of breast milk and the comfort of the baby while breastfeeding. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that mother’s breastfeed their babies during the first hour after giving birth and continues until the first 6 months of life. Based on the initial survey through question and answer with 8 mothers who were breastfeeding 0-6 months stated that breast milk production was not smooth. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of psychological stress with the smoothness of breastmilk in mothers who breastfeed 0-6 months babies at Lingkungan III Kelurahan Pantai Johor, Tanjung Balai in 2018.
This research uses analytical survey method with cross sectional approach. The populations in this study were nursing mothers at Lingkungan III Kelurahan Pantai Johor, Tanjung Balai as many as 52 mothers with sample taken by using a total population technique of 52 mothers. The data collection was taken from primary, secondary and tertiary data. The data analysis used univariate analysis in the form of frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using chi-squre test at 95% confidence level.
The results showed, as many as 53.8% of mothers who experienced moderate stress and 76.9% of mothers who were breastfed were not smooth. Statistical test results obtained p-value = 0,000 where p-value <α (0,000 <0.05)
The conclusion of the study shows that there is the relationship of Psychological Stress with the Smoothness of Breastmilk in Mothers who Breastfeed 0-6 Months Babies at Lingkungan III Kelurahan Pantai Johor, Tanjung Balai in 2018. It is suggested to the head of Lingkungan III to collaborate with the midwife regarding the provision of counseling on breast milk production so that the mother can still breastfeed the baby up to 6 months.
