Abstract
Smoking behavior are currently becoming an important concern of the world today. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the tobacco epidemic is the world's biggest threat today. In Indonesia, there is an increase of smoking early onset in Indonesia especially among students aged <15 years. This study aims to determine the relationship of factors related to smoking behavior among students at SMPN-1 Pangkatan, Labuhanbatu District in 2017.
This research is an analytical research conducted by using cross-sectional survey design approach. A total of 84 male students of class VII, VIII and IX at SMP Negeri 1 Pangkatan, Pangkat District Labuhanbatu were selected using random sampling base on the population list. Independent variables were knowledge, attitude, access to cigarettes at home, access to smoking at school, the existence of smoking parents, the family memebrs smokers, and the existence of smoking peers; the dependent variable is smoking behavior. The statisical test used was logistic regression's enter method at 95% of confidence level.
It was found that smoking behavior among junior high school students in this study was quite high. The knowledge and the presence of adults who smoke at home was the most determining factor of smoking behavior among junior high school students. It is recommended to intensify the prevention of smoking in schools by involving students, parents and District Health Office as well as religious leaders, community leaders and traditional leaders. Involving the cigarette sales or shop also crucial to be a part of prevention strategy.
