Abstract

Betel (Piper betle Linn) is one of the most nutritious plants. Utilization of betel leaf as herbal medicine, among others, to treat cough, to overcome body odor, acne and as an anti-diarrhea. Escherichia coli is a gram negative, rod-shaped, anaerobic facultative and is a normal inhabitant of the intestine in addition to breeding in the environment around humans.
This study was conducted to determine the properties of ostatic bacteria of boiling water (infusum) of betel leaf to the growth of E. coli bacteria. This type of research is pre-experimental by design the one-shot case study (treatment of a certain group, then measured) in this case the disk diffusion method , Where in the early stages will be done infusum leaf betel then tested the inhibitory power against E. coli bacteria.
This research was conducted in campus bacteriology laboratory of Health Analyst Poltekkeskemenkes Medan conducted in May s / d July. From the results of research conducted showed that infusion of betel leaves at 25% concentration has been able to inhibit the growth of E. coli bacteria. The greatest inhibitory is at 100% concentration of 12 mm.
Conclusions in this study can be stated that the infusion of betel leaf is only an ostatic bacterium, and this inhibitory power is the prevention of E. coli development in a short time. Besides that, it is suggested to do research by doing synergister with other infusum.
