Abstract
Beluntas leaves (Pluchea indica L.) are one of the plants that contain active compounds, namely saponins, alkaloid tannins and flavonoids. Previous studies have shown that the extract of beluntas ethanol has antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans, in dental plaque in vitro at concentrations of 10%, 20% and 30% and has been proven effective and comparable to chlorhexidine. This study aimed to determine whether Beluntas leaves can be formulated as a mouthwash form, with a concentration of 5%, 10% and 15%.
This research method useed experimental methods. Test parameters in this study include pH test, stability test, preference test and homogeneity test.
The research test showed that the preparation of the mouthwash of ethanol extract of Beluntas leaves met the physical properties parameters of mouthwash, namely: pH test which was still in safe intervals between 5.0-7.0. Stable stability test for 4 weeks storage. The preferred test of preference by respondents was the formulation of mouthwash with the addition of 5% ethanol extract of Beluntas leaves, because it was not too thick so it was comfortable when rinsed. The homogeneity test was observed in the absence of coarse particles in the preparation.
The conclusion of this study that ethanol extract of Beluntas leaves (Pluchea indica L.) can be formulated in mouthwash form that meet the test parameters. It was recommended that researchers further examine the things that result in an increase in pH values on the preparation if the addition of Beluntas leaf extract and test the mouthwash preparation in bacteria in the mouth was carried out.
