Abstract
Dermatitis is a medical term for skin disorders where the skin looks inflamed and irritated which is commonly found in scavenger workers. TPA of air terjun is a TPA in Medan Marelan Sub-district where the most of the scavengers were found with dermatitis symptoms such as itching, red spots, watery red spots with white spots. This study aims to determine the relationship between the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Working Period and Personal Hygiene with symptoms of dermatitis in scavengers in the Air Terjun TPA in the District of Medan Marelan in 2018.
This type of research used an analytical survey with Cross Sectional research design. The population of this study were all scavengers in the TPA Air Terjun in Medan Marelan District as many as 220 people with a total sample of 142 respondnets that were taken by Accidental Sampling technique. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis with Chi-square test statistics with a 95% confidence level.
The results showed that there was a relationship between PPE use (p = .001) and personal hygiene (p = .038) with symptoms of dermatitis in scavengers at the Waterfall Village TPA in Medan Marelan Subdistrict in 2018. Working period variables were not associated with symptoms of dermatitis (p = .812).
It was suggested to Medan Marelan Sub-district government and the Head of Air terjun area to work together with the local health center to provide free treatment and provide health promotion to the scavengers in the TPA Terjun every month to reduce the symptoms of dermatitis in the scavengers.
