Abstract
Sintrong plant (Crassocephalum crepidiopides (Benth.) S. Moore) is a kind of compositae tribe. The chemical content in sintrong leaves are saponins, flavonoids and polyphenols. Based on its compound contain, sintrong (Crassocephalum crepidiopides (Benth.) S. Moore) can be used as a hand sanitizer form. This research aims to formulate the ethanol extract of sintrong leaves into hand sanitizer gel form.
This study was done by using an experimental method that used sintrong leaf extract (Crassocephalum crepidiopides (Benth.) S. Moore) with a variety of gelling agent bases, namely CMC-Na, HPMC, Carbopol. The evaluation of gel form includes organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, irritation, dispersion, and preference/hedonic.
The results showed that the hand sanitizer gel form of sintrong leaf extract (Crassocephalum crepidiopides (Benth.) S. Moore) met the gel quality parameters including organoleptic test (having a liquid consistency, thick, supple, with the addition of sintrong leaf extract which causing brownish black color and smell typical). The homogeneity test did not show coarse grain on all gel form. A pH test that still meets the pH of the skin was 4.5-6.5. The irritation test which gave was negative results on all form. The scattering power test of each gelling agent base was different which still meets the parameters. The hedonic test showed nthat HPMC preferred by panelists.
The conclusion of this study shows that sintrong leaf extract (Crassocephalum crepidiopides (Benth.) S. Moore) can be formulated into hand sanitizer gel form based on the gelling agent CMC-Na, HPMC, Carbopol. From the three types of gelling agent, HPMC has the best physical properties and minimal irritation effects. It is suggested to the next researcher to formulate sintrong leaves in different dosage forms and withdrawal of chlorophyll from sintrong leaves for hand sanitizer gel form to produce a good form.
