Abstract
Smoking activities are often carried out by individuals starting in high school, maybe even before. When children sit in high school, most of the male students smoke is an activity that becomes their social activity and according to them smoking is a symbol of association for them. The purpose of this study was to determine the affecting factors on students’ smoking behavior of SMA Negeri 2 Tambusai, Rokan Hulu District in 2018.
The research method used is mixed methods with sequential explanatory approach, a population of 53 people, the quantitative sample uses the total population while the qualitative informants are 8 people and for the informants are 3 students smokers, 3 parents, school principals and 1 cigarette seller. Data analysis was done by univariately, bivariate using chi-square, multivariate using multiple logistic regression at 95% confidence level (α = 0.05) and depth interviews with informants.
The results showed that the factors that affect students’ smoking behavior of SMA Negeri 2 Tambusai were attitudes, infrastructure and parents with a p value <0.05. While the factors that have no effect were knowledge and peers with p value> 0.05. Parent factors were the factors that have the most influence on the smoking behavior of students of SMA Negeri 2 Tambusai. Parent variables have Exp (B) = 39,734 (95% CI = 3,791-416,423), means that respondents who have smoker parents have the opportunity to smoke 39,734 times higher than respondents who dis not have smoker parents.
The conclusion of this study shows that students' smoking behavior is affected by attitudes, infrastructure and parents. It is suggested to students of SMA Negeri 2 Tambusai to be negative towards cigarettes by behaving healthily and to the Principal cooperating with cigarette sellers socializes the dangers of smoking to health and to parents to become examples and become exemplary parents by not smoking.
