Abstract

Pain during labor is a physiological process. It is about 12% - 67% of women feel worried about the pain that will be experienced during labor. One effort to reduce labor pain is massage. From a preliminary survey conducted at Pratama Delima Clinic Belawan in 5 maternal mothers who performed a back massage for 2 maternal mothers, they felt less pain at the time of contraction, and 3 of these mothers did not feel less pain during contractions. This study aims to determine the effect of back massage on the intensity of labor pain during the active phase I at Pratama Delima Clinic Belawan in 2018.
Massage on the back during labor can function as an epidural analgesic which can reduce pain and stress, and can provide comfort to the mother. Back massage is a simple technique that midwives and families can do to reduce the pain the mother feels during labor.
The method used in this study is quasy experiment design. That was, one group pre test post test which was selected in total sampling at Pratama Delima Clinic Belawan in August to September 2018. The number of samples was 20 respondents. The pain intensity was measured using a numeric rating scale. The data was analyzed by using the wilcoxon test non-parametric statistical test. The results of the analysis of the value of p = 0,000 there was a difference in the mean intensity of the first stage of labor before and after the back massage.
The conclusion of this study shows that there is a massage back effect on the intensity of labor during the active phase I, therefore it is expected that each childbirth helper can provide comfort during labor by controlling the pain of labor through back massage.
