Anemia is a health problem associated with a high incidence and complications that can arise both in the mother and in the fetus. The WHO report says 35-75% of pregnant women are deficient and increase with pregnancy. Anemia will increase the risk of getting Low Birth Weight (LBW), bleeding before and during childbirth, and can even cause the death of the mother and her baby, if the mother is suffering from severe anemia. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of anemia with the incidence of low birth weight babies at Sundari Medan General Hospital in 2018.
This research method uses analytic cross sectional approach. The population taken was all mothers who gave birth with Low Birth Weight (LBW) at Sundari General Hospital in 2018 in July 2017 to June 2018 as many as 75 people, the number of samples in this study were 75 people with total population techniques.
The results of univariate research showed that there were 41 mothers who experienced anemia (54.7%) and 34 (45.3%) who did not experience anemia. There were 59 babies with low birth weight (LBW). %) and those who experienced very low birth weight babies (LBW) were 16 babies (21.3%). Based on bivariate analysis shows the results of statistical tests using chi-square obtained significant values of anemia that is α 0.03 <0.05.
The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship of anemia with the incidence of Low Birth Weight Babies in Sundari General Hospital Medan in 2018. Suggestions are expected to pay more attention to hemoglobin levels so that it can reduce the risk of giving birth to babies with Low Birth Weight (LBW).
