Abstract

The right breastfeeding skills can support mother's success in providing breast milk which can reduce the occurrence of regurgitation in infants aged 0-6 months. Breastfeeding is how the mother positions the baby properly so that it will attach the breast. Based on a preliminary survey conducted by researchers on 15 breastfeeding mothers at Sumber Mulyorejo, East Binjai District in 2018 the results showed that 7 mothers had rarely experienced regurgitation after breastfeeding and 5 mothers had never experienced regurgitation after breastfeeding and 3 mothers often experienced regurgitation after breastfeeding. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship of breastfeeding position with the occurrence of regurgitation in infants aged 0-6 months.
The type of this research is analytic survey with Explanatory Research approach. The populations was mothers who have infants aged 0-6 months as many as 32 people and all of them were used as research samples. The data were analyzed by univariate and bivariate using chi-square at a significance level of 5%.
The results showed that mothers who applied breastfeeding positions poorly as many as 18 respondents (56.2%) and infants aged 0-6 month experienced abnormal regurgitation as many as 15 respondents (46.9%). There was a relationship between breastfeeding position and the occurrence of regurgitation in infants 0-6 months with a p value of 0.004 <0.05.
The conclusion of this study shows that there is a relationship between the position of breastfeeding and the occurrence of regurgitation at Sumber Mulyorejo, East Binjai Sub District in 2018, and it is suggested that mothers know and apply the correct breastfeeding position so that infants aged 0-6 months experience normal regurgitation. To the Health workers needs to provide regular counseling to mothers having babies about the correct techniques and ways of breastfeeding to avoid regurgitation.
