Abstract

Indonesia Ministry of Health (MoH) reported that exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia is still very low. It is reported that the first 1 hour breast feeding covers only 34.5 percent. The data also showed that by the end of the fifth month, exclusive breastfeeding coverage was only 15.3 percent. This means that the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding has failed since the birth of a baby. This study aimed to explore the cause of exclusive breastfeeding cessation by mothers who have babies in the area of Perlayan Health Centre, in Labuhanbatu District.
This research used descriptive design approach by using qualitative study with in-depth interview technique. The research was conducted in the area of Perlayuan Health Center. Key informants in this study were mothers with infants aged 6 months to 1 year. Other informants were husbands and other family members. In three urban villages, informants were 10 mothers and 2 other family members and 2 health workers. Data were analyzed by using thematic analysis using after applying manual coding of transcripts of interview results.
Research suggests that exclusive breastfeeding cessation was caused by inadequate knowledge of breast feeding. Another factor was mother's work. The other factors were health workers and other family members who adviced the provision of foods other than breast milk.
It is recommended that District Health Office and Health Centre provide better education and health promotion for mothers to improve breastfeeding practise. The focus is on the emphasis that breast milk has an irreplaceable content and no alternative foods or drinks able to replace breast mik.
