Abstract

North Sumatra has the lowest coverage of exclusive breastfeeding, which is 33%. One regency/city with an achievement of <10% is Tanjungbalai at 8.58%. Childbirth history is one of the causes of the low coverage of exclusive breastfeding. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of labor history with exclusive breastfeeding at Dr Tengku Mansyur Tanjungbalai Hospital in 2018.
This research uses analytical survey method with cross sectional approach. The populations in this study were mothers who had infants aged 7-12 months at Dr Tengku Mansyur Tanjungbalai General Hospital both in SC and normal delivery in September 2018 as many as 72 mothers, sample removal with accidental sampling technique so that the sample in this study were 31 respondents. The data collection was taken from primary, secondary and tertiary data. The data analysis used univariate analysis in the form of frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using chi-square test with a 95% confidence level.
The results of data analysis found that mothers who gave birth in SC as many as 26 respondents (83.9%), mothers who did not give exclusive breastfeeding were 27 respondents (87.1%). The results of statistical tests found p = 0.008 where the value of p <α (0.008 <0.005)
The conclusion in this study shows that there is a relationship between the labor history and exclusive breastfeeding at Dr Tengku Mansyur Tanjungbalai General Hospital in 2018. It is suggested that the health workers, especially midwives can always provide counseling about exclusive breastfeeding since the mother during pregnancy, support the mother to be willing to do Early Breastfeeding Initiation as a step the beginning of breastfeeding and help mothers to overcome their problems during breastfeeding.
