Abstract

Sodium benzoate is a preservative that is permitted for use in food and drinks. Research has been conducted with the aim to find out the plastic bottle tea drinks containing preservative sodium benzoate, find the amount of it and to determine its levels to see whether it meet the maximum usage requirements according to the regulations of the Head of BPOM RI No. 36 of 2013. This research used the ultraviolet spectrophotometer method. To determine the content of preservative sodium benzoate, sample form was first performed by extracting benzoate compounds in an acidic atmosphere with chloroform so that it was extracted as benzoic acid. Chloroform extract was then added with NaOH to calcify the sample solution so that all of it was present as a water-soluble salt. The chloroform extract was taken from a layer of water and then the absorption was measured with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 225nm with distilled water as a solvent. The analysis showed that the preservative levels of sodium benzoate which were calculated as benzoic acid in each sample were sample A of 18.4065 mg/kg; sample B was 14.5479 mg/kg; sample C 17.2752 mg/kg; sample D was 14.2182 mg/kg; and sample E was 15,3471 mg/kg. Based on these results it can be concluded that the levels of sodium benzoate in samples A, B, C, D and E meet the standard requirements for the maximum usage limit of no more than 400 mg/kg.
