Abstract

Antibiotic resistance may be caused of the frequent use of antibiotics which is indicated by an increase in the pattern of antibiotic sensitivity in years. Almost every person experienced some type of Staphylococcus aureus infection found in several body tissues. Every tissue of the body can become infected and cause disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of the antibacterial activity of lemon peel extract against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This type of research is experimental laboratory research. The sample used was lemon peel extracted by maceration using 96% ethanol solvent. Evaluations conducted in this study include the examination of the characteristics of simplicia, phytochemical screening, antibacterial activity test, and data analysis. Phytochemical screening results show that the presence of flavonoid and alkaloid compounds in lemon peel extract which acts as an antibacterial. Flavonoids play a role in inhibiting energy metabolism by inhibiting the use of oxygen by bacteria. Alkaloids play a role in disrupting the constituent components of peptidoglycan in bacterial cells so that the layers of the cell wall are not formed intact, causing cell death. Antibacterial activity test results using One way Anova, showed a significant difference between concentrations of 50%, 60% with 70%. The most effective concentration of lemon peel extract which inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus is at a concentration of 70%. In future studies, it is recommended to make antibacterial pharmaceutical preparations from lemon peel extract and extract lemon peel by fractionation, so that the compounds are obtained separately.
