Abstract
Thai eggplant (Solanum xanthocarpum) is a tropical plant which is quite
well known in Indonesia as one of the native vegetables. The purpose of this study
was to determine the antibacterial activity test of ethanol extract of Thai
eggplants (Solanum xanthocarpum).
The research method used in this study is the defuse method. Based on the
results of microscopic examination of thai eggplants that is yellow, brownish, the
characteristic aroma of eggplant, tasteless. Microscopic examination of Thai
eggplant simplisia powder has sclerenchyma and sclereid tissue or has stone
cells.
The results of the antibacterial activity test of ethanol extract of Thai
eggplant on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by using the same
concentration variations in the two bacteria, namely concentrations of 15%, 35%,
45%. Staphylococcus aureus bacteria inhibitory activity obtained with an average
diameter of inhibition zone at the greatest concentration of 45% (12.5% mm) and
on Escherichia coli bacteria which have inhibitory zone diameters obtained with
an average of 45% concentration (14.7mm).
The conclusion shows that Ethanol extract of Thai eggplants (Solanum
xanthocarpum) has inhibited the antibacterial activity of both gram-positive and
gram-negative bacteria.
