Abstract

Infectious disease is one of the health problems in the community that is difficult to overcome completely. One cause of infectious diseases is bacteria. Diseases that arise due to infection by bacteria is acne caused by the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Pagoda flower (Clerodendrum paniculatum L.) is a plant that is usually planted in the yard of a house, garden and roadside as an ornamental plant but in fact has medicinal properties. Pagoda plant leaves contain several antibacterial compounds such as flavonoids, tannins and triterpenoids. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of Pagoda plant leaves ethanol extract of against bacteria that commonly infect acne, namely Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
This type used experimental research with extraction method that was maceration with 70% ethanol solvent. The sample of this research was the ethanol extract of pagoda plant leaves with dilution concentrations of 5%, 10% and 20%. The inhibition test used the disc diffusion method.
The test results showed that the ethanol extract of pagoda plant leaves has antibacterial activity against acne-causing bacteria namely Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis marked by statistical test results that showed a significant difference in the negative control group.
The conclusion shows that the ethanol extract of pagoda plant leaves has antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis and has a response with a strong category.
