Abstract

CYCLAMATE ANALYSIS IN POWDERED AND PACKAGED BEVERAGE
BY UV-VIS SPECTROPHOTOMETRY METHOD
Introduction :Cyclamate is an artificial sweetener that has a high sweet taste of sucrose. Excessive consumption of cyclamate can cause cyclamate metabolism in stomach that will produce carcinogenic cyclo hexamine compounds. These compounds can cause bladder cancer and atrophy that is testicular wasting and chromosomal damage.Research Purposes : This study aims to determine the levels of cyclamate in powderred and packaged beverage and to know that the levels were in accordance to the regulations of National Agency of Drug and Food Control. Research methods:This research method was conducted by Uv-Vis spectrophotometry where the sample was extracted using sulfuric acid, ethyl acetate, sodium hydroxide, cyclohexane, 1% hypochlorite and measured its absorbance at a wavelength of 314nm. Results : The results of this study indicated that the cyclamate content for Marimas samples was 1.2797mg/kg, Jagus was .7464mg/kg, Pop Ice was 1.9251mg/kg, Nutri Jeruk was 4.1455 mg/kg, X-Tea 4.3777mg/kg, O'café 4.3375mg/kg.Conclusion : These results concluded that the cyclamate content in powdered and packaged beverage samples still meets the requirements set by National Agency of Drug and Food Control that was 350mg/kg.
