Abstract
Cream has a high aesthetic value and comfort. Creams containing natural ingredients are now more desirable because of the trend of back to nature, one of the plants that can be used as an antibacterial alternative is the skin of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus). Dragon fruit skin contains vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids.
This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract cream of red dragon fruit peel against Propionibacterium acne. This type of research is an experimental laboratory which was divided into 3 treatment groups and 2 control groups. The treatments consisted of concentrations of 20%, 30%, and 40%. The positive control is vitacid cream and negative control is cream base. The antibacterial test was carried out by the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method.
The results showed that the cream met the requirements of homogeneity, pH (4.5–6.5), spreadability in formulas 1 and 2, whereas in formula 3 it did not meet the requirements (5–7 cm), and the antibacterial activity test of the ethanol extract of the skin cream red dragon fruit with a concentration of 20% has an average inhibition zone diameter of 8 mm, a concentration of 30% is 9.66 mm, and a concentration of 40% is 11.83 mm.
From this study can be concluded that the cream preparations from an ethanol extract of red dragon fruit skin have good antibacterial activity against P.acnes bacteria with the classification of medium-strong growth retardation response. Then the greater the concentration of ethanol extract of a red dragon fruit peels in the preparation, the greater the antibacterial activity against P. acne.
