Abstract

Mercury is a dangerous ingredient that is often added to face whitening creams. The presence of mercury in whitening cream products can cause damage to organs and is also toxic and is a carcinogenic substance (causing cancer) in humans. Objectives;This research is to find out the mercury content in face whitening cream cosmetics which are marketed in Pajus and Petisah market of Medan city. Method; This research was a descriptive study conducted with qualitative and quantitative analysis. The sample in this study were 9 samples of facial whitening cream, the sampling was done by purposive sampling. Qualitative analysis was done by testing the flame with copper wire, and quantitative analysis was done by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Result; The results showed that five samples contained positive mercury. From the results of the validation, the regression equation and the calibration curve Y=.00008029x+.000076 with the detection and quantization limits of 5.6359µg/L and 1.6908µg/L. The accuracy test was indicated by the percent recovery value in the range of 60-115% and the precision test was indicated by the SBR% value of 18.05-21.89%.Conclusion; The conclusion shows that mercury levels of five samples studied were highest in the AT sample (16,1178µg/g) and the lowest mercury level in the CT sample (4,5060µg/g). It is suggested to consumers to be more careful in buying cosmetics, especially cosmetics that do not have a BPOM distribution permit and cosmetics that quickly give a white effect in an unusual time and instantly.
