Abstract

Facial whitening is cream in the form of a mixture of chemicals or other ingredients that can whiten the skin. The presence of Hg metal in facial whitening cream products is very dangerous. This study aims to determine the content of mercury and determine the amount of its content in unregistrated facial whitening creams that are circulating at Padang Bulan market of Medan City.
The method used in this study was done experimentally with the independent variables represented by unregistratedfacial whitening creams and the dependent variable was represented by mercury levels in the sample. Research includes sample collection, sample preparation, wet destruction, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of mercury levels in whitening creams by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
The results obtained of qualitative analysis on several brands of face whitening creams there were three brands of unregistrated face whitening cream samples that contain mercury, the mercury calibration curve obtained by the regression line equation namely Y=0.00008029x+0.000076, with a correlation coefficient (r) for mercury of 0.9996. The accuracy of the test results for the mercury content was 103.50%. And the RSD value for mercury was 6,9742%.
The conclusion of the analyzed sample contains mercury where the heavy metals content of mercury was lowest (130.0418±20.4195) and highest (171.6624±20,1257µg/kg). From the results of this study it can be concluded that the sample indicates that the whitening cream used as the sample of this study is not safe to use as stated in the Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Food and Drug Administration on cosmetics containing dangerous ingredients / material is prohibited.
