Abstract
Breast milk is the best and most ideal food for babies. ASI contains all the nutrients needed in the right amount and balance. Besides that, breast milk contains immune substances or antibodies that function to protect babies from various germs. Exclusive breastfeeding is mother's milk which must be given or breastfed to her newborn baby until the baby is 6 months old, without giving any extra addition to the baby, both water, fruit juice and formula milk. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of maternal nutritional status with exclusive breastfeeding at the Medan Marelan Poskeskel Rengas Clinic in 2018.
The research design used was an analytical survey with a cross sectional approach. The population in this study were mothers who had 7-12 months babies as many as 32 respondents and the sample distribution was using Accidental Sampling of 32 people. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test. From 32 respondents 10 who did not give exclusive breastfeeding and 22 respondents gave exclusive breastfeeding, then from 32 respondents 11 respondents had malnutrition 21 respondents had good nutrition.
The results showed that the results of statistical tests using the Chi-square test, obtained the calculation results of p value = 0,000 <α = 0.05, then Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted.
The conclusion in this study is that there is a relationship between the nutritional status of mothers and exclusive breastfeeding and it is expected that local health workers will provide counseling about exclusive breastfeeding.
