Abstract

The coffee parasite (Scurrula parasitica L.) is a type of plant whose life does not require soil media. It lives as a parasite attached to the branches of other wood trees and sucks the dissolved minerals so that the wood trees it attaches to can die. Plant coffee parasites contain many elements that are efficacious, especially in healing cancer. Cancer is a disease that is associated with the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of ethanol extract of coffee parasites leaves (Scurrula parasitica L.) on shrimp larvae (Artemia salina Leach.). In this study used the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method which is indicated by the LC50 value.
This study was an experimental study using 6 concentrations, each of which was carried out as many as 3 (triplo) repetitions. The concentration is 20 ppm, 40 ppm, 60 ppm, 80 ppm, 100 ppm, 500 ppm and I negative control. 210 shrimp larvae of Artemia salina Leach were used. Then observed for 24 hours, then counted the number of shrimp larvae Artemia salina Leach that died after 24 hours.
The results are calculated by the method of probit analysis using SPSS 18.0 for windows software, obtained LC50 of 43,047 ppm. So it can be concluded that ethanol extract of coffee parasite leaves has a toxic effect on Artemia salina Leach larvae and has the potential as an anticancer because it has LC50<1000 ppm.
