Abstract

One of the advantages of Early Breastfeeding Initiation is to stimulate the production of oxytocin and prolactin, thereby increasing milk production. The strongest baby sucking reflex in the first hour. Colostrum is the first milk out which has many benefits for babies. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge of third trimester pregnant women about colostrum with readiness to initiate early breastfeeding at the Trismalia Clinic in Percut Sei Tuan Medan Estate District in 2018.
This type of research is an analytical survey using a cross sectional approach. The population in this study were 34 respondents. The sample used a total population technique, namely all trimester III pregnant women in August-September 34 respondents. Data were analyzed using the chi-squere test.
The results of the study found that knowledge of third trimester pregnant women about colostrum in Trismalia Clinic were mostly in the less category as many as 16 people (47.1%) and from 34 respondents who were ready to do early breastfeeding initiation 13 people (38.2%) while those who were not ready 21 people (61.8%). The chi-square test results show that p = 0,000 <0,05, meaning that there is a relationship between knowledge about colostrum and readiness to initiate early breastfeeding.
The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between knowledge of third trimester pregnant women with readiness to initiate early breastfeeding at Trismalia Clinic Percut Sei Tuan Medan Estate District in 2018. It is recommended for third trimester pregnant women to add insight and knowledge about colostrum and early breastfeeding initiation.
