Abstract
Cancer is one of the number 2 deadly diseases in the world after heart disease. The prevalence of tumor or cancer in Indonesia is 4.3 per 1000 people. An estimated 12 million people get cancer every year. The search for new sources to produce anticancer compounds continues. Examples of plants that can be used as anticancer drugs from natural ingredients are bidara leaves (Ziziphus mauritiana). Bidara leaves (Ziziphus mauritiana) are plants that are widely known as family medicinal plants. Bidara leaves also contain lots of compounds that can prevent cancer growth, one of it is flavonoids. This study aims to determine the potential for acute toxicity (LC50) ethanol extract of bidara leaves (Ziziphus mauritiana).
The method used in this study is Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). This test consists of 6 concentration treatments, namely, 100 ppm; 80 ppm; 60 ppm; 40 ppm; 20 ppm and 0 ppm as a negative control, each of it is repeated three times. At each concentration, there were 10 test animals of the 48-hour Artemia salina Leach larvae. The toxic effect of extract was identified by the percentage of Artemia salina Leach larvae death by using probit analysis (LC50).
The results of this study got a linear regression equation Y = 3.8236x + 0.0628so that the LC50 value was 1.2912. LC50 values were analyzed and got a value of 19.5524 ppm. This means that the death of test animals reached 50% when the concentration of the compound reached 19.5524 ppm.
Based on the toxicity test of Bidara leaves (Ziziphus mauritiana)ethanol extract with BSLT (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) method in this study is very toxic because LC50 <1000 ppm so it has the potential as an anticancer. This is shown by the acquisition of ethanol extract data reaching LC50 at a concentration of 19.5524 ppm. Then it is necessary to do further research on the ethanol extract of bidara leaves (Ziziphus mauritiana) against cancer cells as anticancer.
