Abstract

Corn contains Vitamin A or carotenoids and vitamin E which helps for vision, growth and formation of body tissues. In addition to its function as a micronutrient, the vitamin acts as a natural antioxidant that can enhance the body’s immunity and inhibit cell degenerative damage. The research objective was to make a formulation of a gel mask made from corn seeds (Zea mays L.)
This study used a laboratory experimental method of gel mask form consisted of components such as corn seed extract, aquadest, 96% ethanol, polyvinyl alcohol, HPMC and glycerin with a concentration of 0%, 1%, 3%, 5% . Making corn seed ethanol extract by stripping, washing, cutting and refining. Test on gel mask preparations were made including, homogeneity test, organoleptic test, pH test, preparation time test dry, dispersion test, and irritation test using 12 volunteers.
Formulation of gel mask form used the corn seed ethanol extract as active ingredient was made quite stable, pH ranged from 6,7 to 7,0 so it is safe to use.
Conclusions from the study of ethanol extract of corn seeds can be formulated in gel mask form with varying concentrations of 1%, 3%, 5%, indicating a homogeneus arrangement, pH measurement of a gel mask form still meet in physiological pH, the quality inspection result showed that the higher the concentration corn seed extract in a gel mask prapration, the color becomes thicker and the aroma gets sharper, and the dispersing power decrease and the preparation time dries faster. The irritation test in volunteers showed the gel mask of ethanol extract of corn seeds did not irritate the skin. Suggestions from researchers were suggested to make other dosage formulations from corn seed extracts such as moisturizing creams.
