Abstract

Background; Traditionally, karamunting leaves (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Hassk) are used as worm medicine in humans, treating wounds, scabies, treating abdominal pain and diarrhea, holding bleeding and also used to prevent infection after childbirth. Based on traditional aplication as a deterrent to infection of the scar on the cornea and diarrhea, it is suspected that this plant is active against microbes. The resultsshowed that karamunting leaves contained alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins and triterpenoids. Flavonoids, especially in the form of water-soluble compounds, have activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic. Objective; It aims to determine the ability of karamunting leaves infusion to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and to find out at what concentration the karamunting leaves infusion can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Method; This research was an experimental reseacrh. Result; Antibacterial effect test was carried out using agar diffusion method, with a concentration of 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, and 10%. Conclusion; The result showed that the infusion concentration of 50% has not shown an antibacterial effect. Evaporation from 50% concentration was obtained by 30 ml and 15 ml of infusion, each resulting inhibition zone was 5,2 mm and 6,3 mm. Positive control that is tetracycline gives a inhibition zone of 28,5 mm. Negative control that is aquadest has no antibacterial effect.
