Abstract
Neonates or normal newborns are babies born from term pregnancies from 37 weeks to 42 weeks with birth weight of 2500 grams to 4000 grams, without any problems or disabilities in infants up to 28 days of age. After birth the umbilical cord is not cut immediately. (1) The umbilical cord is still connected to the placenta and continues to beat for several minutes to supply oxygen until it can breathe normally. Tetanus neonatorum is a tetanus disease in newborns with a distinctive sign, after the first two days the new baby suffers and suckles normally on the third day or more stiffness occurs throughout the body with difficulty opening the mouth and breastfeeding followed by seizures.
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between treatment with umbilical cord release in newborns in the fajar general hospital work area, this researcher used quantitative methods in descriptive analytic form with a retrospective approach. The data used are primary data through questionnaires which are analyzed by chi-square test using total sampling technique with 32 respondents.
The results of the research conducted on 32 respondents found that the relationship between treatment with umbilical cord release in newborns in the working area of the Public Hospital in 2018 was good category of umbilical cord care as many as 17 people (53.1%). as many as 17 people and the umbilical cord release was normal because it was released on 5-7 days after birth (53.1%), and the cord care was not as good as 15 people (46.9%), and the type of umbilical cord care with betadine gauze and sterile gauze as many as 10 people (31.3%), while normal cord release was 17 people (53.1%).
The conclusion is that there is a relationship between treatment with umbilical cord release of newborns born in the working area of the Medan Fajar Polonia General Hospital in 2018 with a value of P <α or P (0.001), α (0.05). It is recommended that health workers not only provide counseling about cord care, but should be demonstrated with the mother.
