Abstract

Food packaging that is often used by food vendors is Styrofoam. The use of styrofoam as a food container has a negative side to the environment and health. Based on an initial survey of 10 people, only 2 people did not use Styrofoam, while 8 other sellers used Styrofoam. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with the use of styrofoam containers as food packaging for street vendors.

The study used analytic survey methods with cross-sectional approach. The study population was 108 traders with a random sampling technique, amounting to 85 traders. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analyses with chi-square test statistics.

The results of the chi-square test analysis showed the value of each variable including gender p-value=.649, education p-value=.018, selling time p-value=.861, knowledge gained p-value=0.000, attitudes p-value=.008, the availability of containers p-value=.004 and environment p-value = .091.

The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between education, knowledge, attitude and availability of containers with the use of styrofoam containers as food packaging for the vendor, while gender, length of time selling and the environment do not have a relationship with the use of styrofoam containers as food packages for hawker sellers. It is hoped that this research can be one of the efforts to reduce the amount of styrofoam waste and to invite street vendors to find out about the health hazards that can be caused by the use of styrofoam packaging that is not appropriate to the type of food.
