Abstract

Fragrant pandanus (Pandanus amaryllifolius) is a plant that is commonly used as a flavoring agent and coloring in cooking. It is effective to eliminate dandruff, hair loss, DM, anti-cancer and skin infections treatment caused by bacteria and fungi. This study aims to determine the effect of antifungal activity of Fragrant Pandan leaves ethanol extraact on Pityrosporum ovale fungus growth as one that cause dandruff.
Fragrant pandan leaves using 70% ethanol extract was as an extractor. Tests on the growth of the fungi were done by using disc diffusion method on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar media. The study was divided into 6 treatments namely DMSO (negative control), Ketoconazole 2% (positive control) and ethanol extract of fragrant pandanus leaves, each concentration of 70%, 60%, 50% and 40% with repetition of 3 times. Antifungal test was done by measuring diameter of inhibition zone formed.
The results of ANOVA test showed that the ethanol extract greatly influenced the growth of Pityrosporum ovale (P = 0,000). Tukey HSD further tests showed the average inhibition zone diameter for the ethanol extract at a concentration of 70% (16.83mm), not significantly different from the concentration of 60% (14.33mm), but significantly different from the concentration of 50% (11, 17mm) and 40% (9.50mm), whereas Ketoconazole 2% produces the largest inhibitory zone (38.50mm) and DMSO does not produce inhibitory zone on the growth of Pityrosporum ovale.
The conclusion shows that the ethanol extract of fragrant pandanus leaves can inhibit the growth of Pityrosporum ovale and the higher the concentration, the greater the inhibitory effect on the growth of the fungus that causes dandruff.
