Abstract

Hyperglycemia is a state of increased blood glucose levels that exceeds the normal limits commonly experienced by people with DM. Data from Kotapinang District Hospital in 2018, the number of patients with type I DM was 1,470 patients and patients with Type 2 DM were 913 patients. An initial survey at Kotapinang District Hospital of 10 DM patients who had complications of hyperglycemia, 3 patients did not know the prevention of hyperglycemia, 3 patients said there was no need to exercise routinely because they were already maintaining their diet and 4 patients had hyperglycemia because of a bad lifestyle. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of knowledge, attitudes and family support of DM patients with the prevention of hyperglycemia in Kotapinang District Hospital Labuhanbatu Selatan in 2019.
The research design used was analytic research with cross sectional approach. The population in this study were all DM patients in Kotapinang District Hospital in Labuhanbatu Selatan District in January-April 2019, namely 1,463 people. Based on the Slovin formula a sample of 94 people was obtained and taken by accidental sampling technique. Data analysis used univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with chi square test.
The results of the study revealed that the majority of knowledge was lacking (41.5%), the majority of positive attitudes (51.1%) and the majority of family support were lacking (55.3%). The results of the study with bivariate analysis revealed that the p value of each variable was knowledge of 0,000 <0.05, attitude of 0.001 <0.05 and family support of 0,000 <0.05.
The conclusion of this study is there is a relationship of knowledge, attitudes and family support with the prevention of hyperglycemia in Kotapinang District Hospital Kotapinang Subdistrict Labuhanbatu Selatan 2019. It is recommended to the public especially those suffering from DM to be more supportive in controlling blood sugar control to avoid the incidence of hyperglycemia.
