Abstract
Moringa leaves contain high antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Acne vulgaris is a chronic obstructive and inflammatory skin disease in the pilosebaceous unit that often occurs in adolescence. Acne can be caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Propionibacterium acnes. Staphylococcus epidermidis can convert diacylglycerol and triacylglycerol sebaseus to glycerol and fatty acids which can cause proliferation of hyperkeratosis in the follicular part, causing acne. This research is aims to inhibit bacteria in acne by using Moringa leaf ethanol extract.
This study used experimental laboratory research methods and antibacterial testing using paper discs. Cream made with a concentration of 5%, 6%, 7% compared to the cream from market. Moringa leaves were extracted with 96% ethanol. The parameters observed were organoleptic test, pH form test, homogeneity test, and determination of the type of emulsion.
The results showed that the test of inhibition of Moringa oleifera L. extract 5% with inhibition of 19 mm, 6% with inhibition of 16.66 mm, 7% with inhibition of 15.66 mm against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria obtained results that Moringa leaf extract has inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. This was proven by the presence of a clear zone diameter around the disc containing Moringa leaf extract.
This study concluded that Moringa oleifera L. extract can be formulated in a face cream and inhibitory zone area produced by Moringa oleifera L. ethanol extract with a concentration of 5% with a clear zone area of 19mm in Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria .
