Abstract
The high maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR) are health problems that are still faced in Indonesia. MMR in Indonesia in 2012 was 359 per 100,000 live births and IMR 32 per 1000 live births. Whereas MMR at Simeulue District in 2016 was 5 cases out of 1552 mothers who gave birth, and in 2017 MMR as many as 7 cases from 1668 the number of mothers who gave birth. One of the efforts to prevent an increase of MMR in Simeulue is to revitalize the partnership of midwives with the traditional birth attendance. The purpose of this study was to explore more deeply about the role of midwives in preserving local wisdom through partnerships with traditional birth attendance in childbirth assistance.
This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach with retrospective exploration. The research informants can be divided into two categories, namely the main informants; midwives and supporting informants; the traditional birth attendance; postpartum mothers; and community leaders.
The results of the study found a series of midwife roles in preserving local wisdom through partnerships with traditional birth attendance. Partnership actions were carried out among othersbefore delivery, during the delivery assistance process and postpartum services. It turned out that partnership resources support the role of midwives in preserving local wisdom through partnerships with traditional birth attendance, namely financial support, supporting facilities and infrastructure, partner characteristics (skills and expertise, motivation, relationships between partners), role sharing, communication, coordination, decision making, commitment.
The conclusion of this study shows that the partnership of traditional birth attendance and midwife in Simeulue District has not gone well. The obstacles were found that some of traditional birth attendance did not want to have a partnership, the transportation in taking maternal mother to the health center, and the mother itself. It is necessary to allocate funds to fund the partnership programs, having a conference and do the coordination between midwives and traditional birth attendance, counseling to the community about childbirth in health center. . It is expected to the community to understand and realize that giving birth in health center is safer and better than at home.
