Abstract

Background: Horticultural wastes are including plants that still have the potential to be used as ingredients, antimicrobials, flavors, coloring agents, and as food fiber. One of the potential wastes is papaya seeds and banana peel. Shampoo was chosen because it is one of the cosmetic products that is often used daily. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ethanol extracts of papaya (Carica papaya L.) seeds and ethanol extracts of banana peels (Musa acuminata L.) in shampoo formulations and in meeting shampoo quality test requirements. Method: This research type was exsperimental with extract method using maceration. The research included making extracts, extract phytochemical screening tests, shampoo dosage formulations and evaluating the quality of shampoo dosage form. Results: The results obtained from this study were ethanol extracts of papaya seeds and banana peels were positive containing compounds such as alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins and steroids. Shampoo formulation of Papaya seed ethanol extract combine with banana peels have a distinctive odor, were green and in the form of thick liquid with a high foam of 3.0-3.6 cm, have a pH formulation that range between 6.2-6.7 and have stability storage until week 12. The most preferred form of shampoo for panelists in terms of color and odor, shape/consistency, and appearance was formula III. This formulation has no side effects in the form of redness, itching and skin rooting. The results of antifungal activity test shows the results of shampoo preparations in the positive control resulting in 20,38 mm diameter, formula III produces a diameter of 19.90 mm, formula II produces a diameter of hate16.87 Formula I produces a 10.40 mm barrier diameter. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study shows that the ethanol extract of papaya (Carica papaya L.) Seeds and the ethanol extract of banana peels (Musa acuminata L.) can be formulated into shampoo dosage form and meet the requirements of the formulation of quality tests on organolpetis, high foam, pH stability and irritation test form.
