Abstract

Nationally, the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding for infants less than six months is 55.7%. North Sumatra has the lowest coverage of exclusive breastfeeding, which is 33%. Low exclusive breastfeeding coverage can be caused by the incessant formula feeding in infants. There were 8 out of 10 mothers said they had given their babies formula milk from 0-6 months. The purpose of this study was for factors related to formula feeding in 0-6 months infants in Sirandorung Health Center, Central Tapanuli District, North Sumatra in 2018.
This research uses analytical survey method with cross sectional approach. The population of this research is all mothers who have 7-12 months babies as many as 124 mothers, the sample is reduced by the Slovin formula with sampling using cluster sampling so that the sample is 95 mothers. Data collection is taken from the secondary, and tertiary. Data analysis used univariate analysis in the form of frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using chi-squre test at 95% confidence level.
Statistical test results using the chi-square test obtained p = 0.003 in the knowledge variable, p = 0.292 in the education variable and p = 0.005 in the work variable where p <0.05.
The conclusion of this study there is a relationship of knowledge and work with formula feeding in 0-6 months infants in Sirandorung Health Center, Central Tapanuli District, North Sumatra in 2018. It is recommended that health workers be able to increase their role in providing information and motivation and increasing maternal knowledge about benefits and benefits exclusive breastfeeding through counseling or leaflets by involving families closest to the mother.
