Abstract

As high maternal and infant mortality rate has made the government strive to improve the quality of life. One of them is the implementation of Early Breastfeeding Initiation. But in reality, many mothers refuse to do so. Based on data obtained from the 2015 Binjai City Health Office, Binjai City's IMD coverage was only 11% of the targeted 80%. Data obtained from the Tentara Binjai Hospital in 2015 IMD coverage 1.28%, 2016 IMD coverage 0.98%, and 2017 amounting to 0.92% from the targeted 80%. the aim of this study is to analyze the causes of failure of Early Breastfeeding Initiation on post sectio caesarean women at the Binjai Army Hospital in 2018.
This type of research used a qualitative descriptive research method with 3 mother informants, 3 husband informants, and 3 referral midwife informants and responsible midwives in charge of inpatient care as well as data triangulation to maintain data validity.
Based on the results of interviews and observations, it was found that there was a lack of knowledge about the importance of implementing the IMD due to lack of information provided by health personnel, husband support, and motivation, both from referral midwives during ANC visit visits and the role of midwives in hospital who should mother does IMD. The rise of the promotion of formula milk in the mass media, friends, direct offers to mothers, has led to the emergence of thinking patterns of mothers who think formula milk is as good as breast milk.
It is hoped that the Tentara Hospital, which is the most influential factor as a place of reference for disseminating policies and supporting the IMD program, will, among others, seek standard operating procedures related to implementation, supervision and evaluation towards successful breastfeeding.
