Abstract

The high level of MMR and IMR in Indonesia is due to direct and indirect causes. The direct causes are bleeding, hypertension in pregnancy, congestion, infection and complications of abortion. indirect causes include the birth process in the hands of non-health workers (traditional birth attendants). The Indonesian government began in 2008 to develop a partnership program between midwives and traditional birth attendants, but in some regions it has not run optimally. The aim of this study is to qualitatively analysis of midwife partnerships in villages with traditional birth attendants in childbirth assistance.
This type of research used qualitative design. The study was conducted in the working area of Gunung Meriah Health Center. Aceh Singkil. The research informants were 15 people, consisting of 4 village midwives informants, 4 people traditional birth attendants informants, 7 people supporting informants. Qualitative data analysis with stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion or verification.
The results showed that the partnership between midwives and birth attandant goes by sharing and training the information on pregnant women, approaching each other, help and supporting each other despite different skills. The partnerships are not established between midwives and traditional birth attendants due to lack of communication among them. Some midwives are poorly unaccepted by the traditional birt attandants in the village and considered lacking experience in assisting labor.
It is recommended that midwives who have not established partnerships with traditional birth attendants to establish partnerships by conducting home visits, in order to approach the traditional birth attandants who is not partnering so that maternal delivery assistance efforts can minimize the risks during labor. To attended should be trained and with midwives to reduce morbidity and mortality and improve maternal and child health.
