Abstract

The inappropriate selection of places and birth attendants will have a direct impact on maternal health. The most ideal place for childbirth is a health facility with equipment and personnel who are ready to help at any time of labor complications. The purpose of this study is to determine the decision-making system carried out by the family in choosing a home as a place of delivery assistance in Sihare'o, Somambawa Sub District, South Nias District in 2018.
This study is qualitative with an ethnographic approach and uses an unstructured in-depth interview method where it is informal by observing and documenting evidence. This research has been carried out starting from May 22 to June 01 2018. The main informants in the study of mothers who had given birth at home were 3 people and 4 supporting informants consisted of husband and mother-in-law.
The results of this study can be seen that of the 3 main informants found that decision making in the family was done by husband and parents. The family's reason for choosing a home as a place of birth was due to low family economic factors, and was influenced by the level of comfort and habits of the family who have already given birth at home, and if there were obstacles the family was more dominant to call the traditional birth attendants, clergy and midwives to come home.
It is suggested to the health workers, especially midwives placed in Sihare'o, to pay more attention to maternal and child health and are encouraged to stay in the assigned village, and it is expected that the government provides housing facilities for midwives who are placed in the community.
